Prickly Pear Cactus seed oil goes by many names: Barbary Fig Seed Oil, Berber Fig Seed Oil, or simply Cactus Oil.
However, authentic cactus seed oil must be made from the seeds of the Opuntia Ficus Indica Cactus strain.

How is Prickly Pear Oil Made
Authentic, virgin cactus seed oil is traditionally prepared by small cooperatives in Morocco.

First, the cactus fruits are hand-selected at just the right ripeness.
Next, the seeds are extracted from the pulp and slowly dried in the sun at around 45 degrees Celsius until the moisture content is perfect.
After this, a gentle roasting of the cactus seeds is performed. This step significantly increases the content of volatile compounds that give the oil its unique smell, flavor, and nutrient composition.

Finally, the oil is extracted using a screw press followed by filtration or sedimentation to purify the oil from solid plant material.

Cheap Cactus Oils?

The "Prickly Pear Cactus" seeds are very hard, containing no more than 5% - 10% oil.
In fact, 1000 kilos of fruit yield just one liter of pure oil, so it is no surprise you rarely find this wonderful oil outside of Morocco.

To try to make a cheaper oil new producers, outside Morocco, are using modern, single-stage, high-extraction machinery.
This method extracts more oil but bypasses the many hand-processing steps that give Moroccan cactus oil its qualities.
